Orthodontics
Many of us are blessed with healthy teeth and gum. However, not everyone of us is lucky enough to have nice, straight and white teeth. And our desire to have Hollywood smiles fuels advances in the world of orthodontic and teeth whitening.
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry specifically aimed at diagnosing and treating misalignment and irregularities of the teeth and jaw bones. Different teeth and jaw bones problems are best corrected at different times of development with different appliances.
There are many advantages to well-aligned teeth, including easier cleaning, better oral hygiene, clearer speech and a more pleasant smile. Though orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age, the Australian Dental Association suggests that an orthodontic assessment should be performed around the age of six. Some orthodontic problems can be treated more effectively at an early age. If you require orthodontic treatment, we will identify your orthodontic problem and refer you to a local orthodontist.
What problems can be treated with orthodontics?
Here are some of the common conditions treated with orthodontics:
-
Anteroposterior problems – When upper and lower jaws meet, they should interdigitate in a good relationship to allow proper function and to be aesthetically pleasing. Discrepancies in the upper and lower jaws relationship result in problems such as increase overbite or overjet.
-
Crowding problems – Each of us should have 32 teeth in upper and lower jaws including wisdom teeth. Sometimes, our jaws do not have enough space to accommodate all teeth. Late erupting teeth are pushed out of positions resulting in crowding.

Once we identify your orthodontic problems, we will refer you to a suitable local orthodontist.
Here is an overview of some of the types of braces: Invisalign vs braces.
-
-
Fixed orthodontic braces – A metal bracket is affixed to each tooth, and a dental wire is inserted through each bracket. By gradually changing the wires, the braces teeth are slowly moved into their desired positions. When the desired outcome is achieved, the brackets and wires are removed and retainers are issued.
-
Invisalign® braces – This is a newer, removable type of clear braces that is designed to correct minor dental malocclusion. Invisalign® or invisible braces does not interfere with eating because of its removable nature, and has to be worn up to 22 hours per day. Over a series of aligners, your teeth are slowly moved into the desired positions. Not all patients are candidates for Invisalign®. Clear braces price depends on the time taken to correct the malocclusion.
